(From ec.europa.eu)
The European Commission is holding a Standardisation Round Table on 1 July 2015 to build on the Independent Review report and look at further improvements to the European Standardisation System. All stakeholders are invited.
The Independent Review, contracted by the Commission to Ernst & Young, was a first step in better understanding the current system and building it further to make the European Standardisation System fit the challenges of today and tomorrow.
These include EU economic growth, competitiveness for EU businesses and enterprises, and jobs. Standardisation can leverage these objectives.
The results of the Round Table will be reflected in the Single Market Package of autumn 2015.
Three orientations are proposed for discussion at the Round Table:
- governance of the system;.
- interaction within the system;.
- communication with the system.
Background
European Standardisation is a cornerstone of the functioning of the Internal Market, as well as a powerful tool in support of sectorial products and services policies. There is no Internal Market without standardisation.
The EU uses the European Standardisation System in support of EU legislation and policies. As a result, about 20% of standardisation activities are directly linked to EU policy objectives and priorities.
Moreover, modernised standardisation can contribute to EU jobs, growth and investment, including the strengthening of the industrial base. Therefore, the EU has to provide incentives and tools to the European Standardisation System to take up modernisation. This is to make sure that EU industry increases its competitive advantage in the global economy.
European Standardisation has been successful for the last 30 years and the EU has to ensure that it can be as successful for the next 30 years.
