Conference: Cities set standards to become smarter and more sustainable

How to replicate smart city solutions? Are standards the right tools for cities? Can the European standardization organisations be part of cities’ journey towards a smart and sustainable future? The European Commission is hosting this conference that will answer these questions and more.

Why?

Cities are not always fully aware of what standards can offer as they may not be familiar with the value that voluntary standards bring or how to get involved in the standardisation system. This conference will bring cities and standardisers together to debate on priorities and needs for cities in their journey to become smarter and more sustainable.

The event aims to:

• raise awareness and promote standardisation among cities and citizens.
• showcase and exchange cities’ best practices where standards play an important role.
• find out how to replicate smart cities' solutions.
• collect expressions of need for further standardisation development.
• motivate decision-makers and investors.

The results of the debates will feed into the CEN-CENELEC-ETSI sector forum on ‘Smart and sustainable cities and communities’ acting as the advisory and coordinating body for European standardisation activities in this field.  

What?

The Commission is hosting this event as part of the 2017 World Standards Day theme ‘Standards make cities smarter’. This intensive one-day event will include keynotes, case studies and panel discussions. The purpose is to explore the needs of and provide solutions for smart cities in their roll out of suitable infrastructures, services, systems, devices, equipment and much more.

Participants will be able to network and be inspired by solutions that address the challenges of making cities smart and more sustainable, learn from existing projects about how standards already contribute to this goal in Europe, and discover how standards can help in scaling up and replicating smart and sustainable cities’ solutions.
