27 May 2016

(From ec.europa.eu)

The High Level Expert Group on Energy Intensive Industries was created by the Commission decision on 26 October 2015. The second meeting of the group will be held on 20 June 2016 in Brussels.

The meeting will discuss challenges stemming from energy prices and costs and explore issues including trade relations with China. The event will include information and discussion sessions, explaining the various EU tools at hand and identifying concrete opportunities for stakeholders. The meeting will be a half-day event, organised in two discussion panels on energy prices and trade respectively.

The first panel on energy will discuss the impacts of energy prices and costs on the competitiveness of Energy Intensive Industries (EIIs). In January 2014 the Commission published a report on energy prices and costs in response to a request from the European Council. The report was widely welcomed and the EU Ministers for energy requested a follow-up. The Commission acknowledged the importance of having a good understanding of energy prices and costs for reaching a fully functioning internal energy market and included the presentation of biennial analysis on energy prices and costs as an Action of the Strategy Framework for the Energy Union. The follow-up report will be published by the Commission in June 2016.

The second panel on trade will include presentations of CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies) about future of trade relations with China. It will in particular look ahead to future challenges and opportunities for specific sectors.

Participation in the event is restricted to the members of the Group only.
