Copernicus COP21 briefing event: "How can big data help us live in a changing climate?"

06 November 2015

(From ec.europa.eu)

With just weeks remaining until COP21 - when the world gathers in Paris to seek an agreement on climate change - the ECMWF Copernicus breakfast briefing event will examine the potential of data-driven technology to help us mitigate, adapt and succeed in a changing environment.

Copernicus is the European Commission’s flagship Earth Observation programme. It provides governments and industry with tools and information that can help them make better, evidence-based decisions. Our data serves as a gateway to new products and services, while also underpinning effective policy and ensuring accountability. Copernicus provides all this information for free and the service is openly accessible to all users.

ECMWF is delivering two key parts of the programme: the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). It is also assisting with a third: the Copernicus Emergency Management Service.

The briefing event will include a panel discussion demonstrating Copernicus' capabilities, technical and open source credentials, and their relevance to climate change. This discussion will be preceded by a brief networking opportunity. The panel of speakers for the discussion includes:

  • Sir David King, the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative on Climate Change

    .

  • Vincent-Henri Peuch, Head of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service

    .

  • Kevin Sara, Chief Executive, Nur Energie

    .

Attendees include government and business representatives in the technology sector, as well as environmental, technological and scientific media. Journalists will have the opportunity to discover how business and governments can make best use of the innovative, free and open services and data provided by Copernicus.
