Want to travel safely to another EU country? New interactive tool tells you what you need to know

05 July 2020

(From ec.europa.eu)

The interactive ‘Re-open EU’ tool is a platform full of information about which countries are allowing visitors, how you can travel to each country in the EU and what measures you’ll face when you arrive. It’s designed to help people to plan and enjoy their holidays, reunite with friends and family, and make travel easier while keeping everyone safe. The online tool makes information accessible to all by publishing it in 24 languages.

The tool includes an interactive map, outlining the borders and geography of the selected country. It allows you to scroll across surrounding countries, helping you to plan a trip by public transport or car. In an information box, you can find information separated into four categories: COVID-19, travel, services and health and safety.

The COVID-19 information provides links to explain what it is and how it has affected tourism and transport in the selected country. It also provides a phone number for a helpline and other useful links for tourists, regional information and relevant EU initiatives.

With the recent pandemic creating so much uncertainty, the travel information answers many pressing questions. You can select an icon to (boat, plane, train, etc.) to find out more about the country’s transport, depending on what type of transport you are considering. It lets you know if you can enter or exit the selected country as a tourist, whether you can travel freely within the country, which transport you can use to enter the country, which restrictions or quarantine measures will be in place when you enter the country and whether you need a medical certificate to enter.

Once you have the travel information, you may be interested in which services you’ll have access to when you arrive in the country. The next tab outlines all of the most important services and tells you if you’ll be able to use them. Much like the travel information, it answers the question with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ before explaining the situation in more detail. It tells you if non-essential shops have opened in the selected country, if accommodation is available and if beaches and cafes are open. Finally, you are offered an accommodation voucher to use before the end of 2020.

Lastly, the information box informs you of any risks you need to know about before deciding on a visit. This includes areas that you should avoid on your trip, whether a mask or physical distancing is required and recommended precautions you could take when visiting the country.

The Re-open EU tool is updated every 24 hours, keeping you well-informed before and during your trip. If you or your family and friends are thinking about planning a trip in Europe, make sure to check it out and stay safe!
