The future of the global food chain will be largely determined by five major drivers:

  • population growth, demography;.
  • availability and management of resources and the environment;.
  • innovation & technology;.
  • social attitudes;.
  • public policy.

The conference on food safety and nutrition in 2050 – organised by Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Commission – provides an opportunity for dialogue among global stakeholders on the emerging challenges to the food chain and the role of future policy-making in addressing those challenges.

The conference will also provide the opportunity to foster a dialogue on consumers' expectations for safe, nutritious, quality and sustainable food and the role of food science, technology and innovation in achieving them.

By organising this event, the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety aims to prove insight and guidance to future policy-making in order to preserve the high standards of high quality and affordable food for EU consumers.
