Single Market: Commission seeks views on strengthening product compliance with EU rules

Today the Commission launched a public consultation to seek views on the extent of non-compliance with EU rules for goods, and the underlying reasons for the problem in different sectors.

The consultation also seeks opinions on on the most appropriate actions to improve the situation.

Common EU rules for toys, machinery, electrical appliances and many other products lay down specific requirements for goods available on the Single Market.

They ensure that products do not endanger the safety or the security of citizens and protect other relevant public interests so that products can move freely throughout the EU.

However many non-compliant goods still find their way to European consumers and businesses.

Furthermore, companies selling compliant products face unfair competition from those traders who gain a competitive edge by flouting the rules.
